On Being a NVFC Player
Thank you for joining the North Vancouver FC.
We are proud to represent North Vancouver within our soccer community!
Whether you are just starting out in mini soccer, or playing at the youth / divisional level, all players share in a common vision and help build the future of our Club. Members and Players all need to be aware of the responsibilities of Club membership. Our Club expects that appropriate conduct and respect will be shown by all our Members and Players, both on the field and off.
Please take a minute to review our Players Code to remind yourself of how to demonstrate strong soccer leadership.
Players' Code
- Play for the fun of it, not just to please your parents or coach.
- Play by the rules.
- Never argue with the official’s decisions. Let your captain or coach ask any necessary questions.
- Control your temper – no mouthing off or throwing equipment.
- Work equally hard for yourself and your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will your own.
- Be a good sport. Cheer all good plays, whether your own or your opponents’.
- Treat all players as you yourself would like to be treated. Don’t interfere with, bully, or take unfair advantage of any player.
- Remember that the goals of the game are to have fun, improve your skills and feel good. Don’t be a show-off or always try to get the most points or penalties.
- Co-operate with your coach, teammates and opponents, for without them you don’t have a game.

First Kix
What is First Kix?
First Kix is based on ‘giving the kids back the game’ by providing free play, skill development, and small-sided games with minimal rules.
Our First Kix program is sponsored by Tim Horton’s, and supported by our development partner, the North Shore Soccer Development Centre (NSSDC.) This program is noted for excellent results, and is used by clubs across Metro Vancouver.
Who is this program for?
Players aged 5 & 6 years old from the City and the District of North Vancouver are invited to register. For the 2011/2012 playing season:
- U6: Born Jan 1-Dec 31, 2006; and
- U7: Born Jan 1-Dec 31, 2005.
Will there be teams?
Yes. Teams consist of 10-12 players, mixed into different playing groups of 3-4 during the Saturday mini-games. Teams are formed by combining kids from 2-3 schools, with consideration given to parental requests so that children can play with friends and parents can carpool. Please list the friends your child would like to play with when you register.
What is the format?
U7 & U6 First Kix Soccer consists of one 75 minute session on Saturday, scheduled between 9:00-3:00 pm, and one mid-week practice in a local school gym.
When does the season start?
We play from mid-September through to the beginning of December. There is a winter break, with play resuming end of January and continuing until the middle of March. We celebrate the close of our First Kix soccer program with a Pee Wee Jamboree and trophy ceremony, courtesy of our sponsor, Tim Horton’s.
NB: we do not play on Thanksgiving weekend or during Spring Break weekends.
Where do the boys play?
Saturday sessions are held on grass fields in North Vancouver. Locations change from year to year, and are also dependent on the season. When grass fields are closed due to rain, sessions are moved to gravel fields. The mid-week indoor gym practice day, time and location varies by team.
What is my role as a parent?
NVFC is a volunteer-run organization. We need parents like you to coach and manage our squads. We need a minimum of 2 parent volunteer coaches per team – more are welcome! If you can help, please let us know.
Managers provide information to players and parents, distribute & collect uniforms, and set up the team snack schedule.
Coaches oversee drills, teach soccer skills & the rules of the game, promote sportsmanship, facilitate small-sided games, manage team equipment, and provide players with a fun, supportive environment.
Parents provide support by attending games and practices with their child (one parent or caregiver is required at all sessions), taking turns bringing game-day snacks, and giving players lots of positive encouragement.
Please note: in accordance with BC Soccer requirements, all official Club volunteers who work directly with children (i.e., coaches & managers) are required to complete a Canadian Criminal Record Check.
Tell me more about coaching!
Our coaches are parents just like you! You don’t need to be an expert. The NSSDC trains our new parents on how to coach players and facilitate games.
Our Club actively promotes certified coach training – opportunities include the Community Coaching Certification program at the Child level, and Coaching Theory and top-up sessions to help you complete the requirements for the Community Coach Children (CCC) course. Help us reach of our goal of 100% certification for NVFC coaches!
I want to volunteer!
Awesome! Please check the volunteer box when registering your player, or contact our Club Administrator at info@nvfc.ca. Also, you can check out other volunteer opportunities posted on our website throughout the year.
What does my child need?
You need to provide shin pads, soccer cleats, and a water bottle. Kneepads are not required, but are recommended. Runners are required for indoor gym practices.
The Club provides a uniform kit – jersey, shorts, and socks – at the start of each season. These uniforms belong to the NVFC (you get to keep the socks!), and a uniform deposit is required at the beginning of the season.
We play rain or shine, so please be sure your player has appropriate clothes for cold, wet days – such as a hat and gloves – to keep them warm and happy.
How do I register?
Please visit our Registration page at www.nvfc.ca for complete details. And welcome to the North Vancouver FC!
U8 - U10 Soccer
At U8 - U10 we continue with Small Sided Soccer as recommended by BC Soccer. The focus is player development in a non-competitive enviornment.
-
At U8 we play 4-a-side (including goalkeeper) games. Each team is split in half & two games are played simultaneously. Each game consists of 2 15 minute halves.
-
At U9 & U10 we play 7-a-side (including goalkeeper) games. The games consist of 2 25 minute halves.
All games are scheduled for Saturday mornings and each team practices once a week between games. All games are on the North Shore against other NVFC teams & West Vancouver.
U8 & U9 age groups will be also receive bi-weekly Futsal indoor soccer sessions. For a comprehensive overview of Futsal from BC Soccer, please review the Futsal Guide at the BC Soccer website.
It is recognized that to develop skills, repetitions are needed. The more we touch the ball the better our touch will be! Soccer coaches of all ages use small-sided game environments to develop the technical aspects of their teams. We can also safely state that the more a child has the ball (touches), the more engaged he/she is in the activity, the more fun he/she has!
In keeping with this philosophy, our U11 - U12 program changed to 8 v 8 soccer played on half-sized fields With more touches on the bal a player's basic skills will develop.
U11 House teams play all games on the North Shore with an interlocking schedule with other NVFC teams, West Vancouver, Bowen Island & Sunshine Coast.
U11 Streamed & U12 teams play in the 4 District Soccer League with teams from Burnaby, Richmond, Vancouver & the North Shore.
U12 will consist of both House & Select teams. Players will be chosen for a Select Team based on a combination of in-season and year-end evaluations and will play at the Gold & Silver levels. Players not chosen or not wanting to play on a Select team will be aassigned to a House team and play at the Bronze level. There can be many levels within each division (Gold 1, Gold 2...Bronze 1, Bronze 2)
U11 Streamed Teams
Overview
NVFC is participating in the U11 4 District Program, also known as “U11 Streamed Teams”. The U11 Streamed Teams will be comprised of our stronger players who have the potential to play competitively in the U11 4 D Program. The number of U11 Streamed Teams formed each year will vary each season depending on the results of our Player Evaluation Process.
The teams will play in the 4 District Soccer League in an interlocking schedule with teams from the North Shore, Burnaby, Vancouver, and Richmond. The number of Steamed Teams formed will depend on the numbers of players interested in participating in this program, their skill levels and the overall skill level of the entire age group. Our U11 Streamed Teams will be balanced; i.e., equal strength. The remaining U11 players will play in the N.S.Y.S.A. House League with games strictly on the North Shore.
The emphasis is on player development for all U11 teams. Game scores must be reported for monitoring purposes only and will never be published. All players can expect to receive equal playing time.
Players will be placed on U11 Streamed Teams based on the results of the Player Evaluation Process. The evaluation process gives consideration to a player’s skill level, athletic ability, and playing ability. . A player and his parents/guardians should consider the attitude required as well as the time and effort commitment involved with a streamed team.
U11 Streamed Team coaches, parents and players can expect:
- Games to be played on and off the North Shore
- Team practices to be held twice a week
- Team participation in tournaments over the summer and on holiday weekends
- Team practices occasionally over the summer
- Player participation in additional outside player development to be encouraged.
